Therapy in Education: Supporting the Whole School, Supporting the Whole Self

27/10/2025

At Livewell Counselling Services, we believe that emotional wellbeing in education isn’t just about helping children and students — it’s about supporting everyone who makes up the school community. From children and their parents to teachers, senior leaders, and support staff, each person brings their private world into the classroom.

The truth is, life inside and outside of school are deeply connected. The challenges, pressures, and emotions that exist beyond the school gates inevitably find their way in — and that’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a reflection of humanity. When we recognise that connection and create safe spaces for people to talk, reflect, and be supported, the whole school benefits.

Life Doesn’t Stay at the Door

Children arrive at school carrying far more than their backpacks. Family worries, friendships, self-esteem, and anxieties can all affect their ability to focus, learn, and connect. Likewise, staff and headteachers often juggle heavy workloads, personal challenges, and the emotional weight of caring for others — all while trying to maintain calm and focus.

Without a safe place to offload, those pressures can quietly build. But with the right emotional support, they can be processed, understood, and transformed into resilience and growth.

Why Staff Wellbeing Comes First

Teachers and school leaders are the emotional heartbeat of any school. They’re the ones who hold space for others — but often, no one holds space for them. That’s where professional supervision, coaching, and counselling make a real difference.

At Livewell, we provide supervision for headteachers and senior leaders, as well as group coaching and counselling for staff teams. This gives education professionals a confidential environment to reflect, release pressure, and reconnect with their sense of purpose. When staff wellbeing improves, the ripple effect on pupils and the wider school culture is undeniable.

Extending Support to Families

Our commitment to emotional support doesn’t stop at the school gates. For schools that host a Livewell counsellor, we also provide a student counsellor to work with parents — helping to strengthen communication and wellbeing across the whole family system.

Supporting parents supports children. When home life feels steadier and parents feel heard, children often show improved confidence, engagement, and emotional regulation.

A Whole-School Approach

Our Whole-School Wellbeing Package is designed to weave mental health and emotional support through every level of school life. We’ve developed this model through years of successful partnerships with schools across Chorley, Leyland, and the wider North West.

Our approach includes:

  • Supervision for senior leaders
  • Group coaching for staff
  • Counselling for staff and students
  • Parent support through student counsellors
  • A culture of openness and emotional safety

It’s not about one-off interventions, it’s about embedding wellbeing into the fabric of school life.

Education and Emotion Go Hand in Hand

Schools are places of growth, not only academic but emotional. When we give everyone the space to breathe, reflect, and be supported, we create communities where people can truly thrive.

At Livewell Counselling Services, we’re proud to stand alongside schools, helping them to nurture resilience, compassion, and connection at every level.

Because when the whole school feels supported, the whole person can flourish.
